Online training course “Introduction to Confocal Microscopy” MVBS02, 2 credit points*
The training course is designed for first time and less experienced confocal users. The course is divided into two parts. The first part is comprised of online lectures (in moodle.ut.ee) and based on that they will have to submit their reports in the form of lecture diaries. Upon successfully completing the first part, the students will be allowed to participate in the practical part (the second part) of the course where an expert will teach about the practical knowledge of confocal microscopy. The course will conclude with a report on the practical work of the course.
Lecture 1: Introduction to microscopy
This lecture will give a brief background about the history of microscopy and distinct types of microscopy.
Lecture 2: Confocal microscopy and the principle of confocal microscopy
This lecture will discuss confocal microscopy, its main types, and the concept of fluorescence in confocal microscopy.
Lecture 3: Confocal microscopy instrumentation and live cell-imaging
In this lecture, the basic parts of confocal microscopy will be introduced.
In addition, the implication of confocal microscopy in live cell-imaging will be discussed.
Lecture 4: Confocal microscopy, concepts and applications
This lecture further describes in detail the confocal microscopy applications.

Hands-on courses
Hands on courses will be organized once or twice a year. The next hands-on course “Conventional confocal imaging (Zeiss LSM 780 and Zeiss LSM
980)” will be held in early spring 2023. Thanks to CZI support it will be fully open to external users.
